On Saturday, August 18, 2012 the Silver Snail attempted to do the near impossible: wrangle hundreds of genre fans (some in costume) to form the longest, nerdiest bucket line ever.
The "move" was largely symbolic, as the new Yonge St. location will not be ready to open until September, and the Silver Snail will continue to operate out of the Queen St. location until the official move. Instead, 100 boxes (filled with prizes) were passed down the 1.6 km length between stores. Hundreds of participants were entertained by our roller derby hype crew -- members from Toronto Roller Derby and The Rollergettes -- and the ranks were partly filled by the 501st Canadian Garrison and the Doctor Who Society of Canada.
At the culmination, the boxes were given away after the Doctor scanned everyone's prize tags. In addition to the 100 prizes, four grand prizes were given away: one $250 gift card for the new Silver Snail location, and three autograph prize packs (Star Wars, Star Trek and Battlestar Gallactica) generously donated by Fan Expo Canada.
Afterwards, participants headed back to the Silver Snail to take advantage of the 50% off sale available to anyone wearing the Moving Day commemorative T-Shirt.
None of this would have been possible without the support of our fans, friends and customers, but we'd particularly like to thank our sponsors:
The Black Canary, for dispensing iced coffee up and down the line. (And for giving our customers a sneak "taste" of the cafe that will be opening in our new store.)
Odin's Beard Interactive, for ongoing graphic and web design support.
Moorshead & Associates for media and event planning support.
