I went fishing Sunday morning with my brother Ken and we landed 25 nice fish. I had a nap when I got home while Penny was out shopping. I got up and read some comic books before going out to a pot luck dinner for my uncle’s 60th birthday. I could not ask for a better day off. That’s why I can come in to work and be the happy comic book curmudgeon that I am when you guys see me.
Captain Marvel #1 – The caption on the cover says she’s “Earth’s Mightiest Hero”. That’s a lot to live up to. The former Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers, gets promoted to Captain in this new debut. Accepting the mantle passed down from the Kree warrior Mar-Vell wasn’t an easy decision. I liked how W-Kelly Sue DeConnick jumps right in with a team-up with Captain America and segues into Carol’s past and her relationship with a female aviation pioneer. The painted art by Dexter Soy wasn’t appealing upon first flip through but it grew on me as I was reading. I hope that the Manwa style doesn’t turn off fans because this is pretty good.
Fables #119 – The good guys’ plight becomes even more dire with the shocking fate of Lord Mountbatten revealed, but W-Bill Willingham offers a glimmer of hope at the end. Too bad he did it in a way that makes it agony to wait for the next issue to hit the racks.
Concrete: Three Uneasy Pieces – I read these three short stories already in the anthology series Dark Horse Presents but they are so good that I was happy to read them again. I wish W&A-Paul Chadwick did more stuff. He did announce that a new Concrete story will hit the racks in the future.
AVX #8 – It’s Namor on a rampage in Wakanda and the only thing stopping his Phoenix Force backed rage is the Black Panther and the Avengers. P-Adam Kubert should always be inked by John Dell.
Justice League #11 – Why do writers like Geoff Johns think that fans want to see their heroes fighting amongst themselves? Was it just to show us that Wonder Woman can kick all the male members’ butts? This is still worth picking up for the Shazam back-up.
Saga #5 – The videoheads are cool and The Will is quite gallant. The characters in this book are just so much fun.
Reset #4 – Well, that was an interesting look inside the life of a washed up celebrity. W&A-Peter Bagge is a master of oddball slice-of-life comics.
Rachel Rising #9 – The real villains finally take center stage.
Secret Service #3 – I hope this guy Gary isn’t British Intelligence’s version of Maxwell Smart. Sorry about that chief.
X-Factor #240 – W-Peter David and As-Neil Edwards, Craig Yeung and Rick Ketcham explain Layla’s “knows stuff” powers perfectly this issue.
Untold Tales of the Punisher Max #2 – Even when Frank loses he wins.
Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #2 – Far out man. Laurie starts her crime fighting career in San Francisco. A-Amanda Conner makes this look so groovy.
The Infernal Man-Thing #2 – Muddled is the mind of W-Steve Gerber. If I had thoughts like these running around in my head I would want them out too.
Buffy Season 9 #11 – I had no clue who Wolfram and Hart are. Thank Google for the internet. So Buffy starts a new career, but it’s hard to take the slayer out of the bodyguard.
Daredevil #15 – Woohoo, Matt triumphs over the bad guys. Now I’m wondering who’s going to operate on the Man Without Fear. It’s a good thing Daredevil is an Avenger now.
Jennifer Blood Annual #1 – W-Al Ewing and A-Igor Vitorino tell us where Jen’s mean streak comes from. Now I know why she had it in for the Blutes. I really like this character and the writing but I wish Dynamite could get better artists on this book.
Wolverine & the X-Men #13 – A-Nick Bradshaw is moving up my top ten chart of favourite artists. Every page was a wow in this Warbird origin story.
